Eduardo Egito - THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO AUTO INSURANCE

have the repairs done, so make sure you’ve got a mechanic and body shop worker you trust.

1. Keep in mind that if you go to one of your insurance company’s preferred repair shops, the work and parts will likely come with a warranty. This is especially helpful considering your replacement parts will likely be used. Why? Their goal is to restore the car to how it looked before the accident, so having new parts would technically be improving your car. However, if there’s an option for new parts and you’d prefer those, you can pay the difference. This is called a betterment charge.

• If the other driver was at fault in an at-fault state, you’ll get money from their insurance company (provided they’re insured, of course).

1. Before you accept a payment, talk to your doctor about the extent of your injuries. Also consider talking with a lawyer. 2. If the accident isn’t a clear at-fault issue, it’s possible you’ll have to go to court to prove the other driver caused it.
