At less than $180,000, it seemed a steal. Ben and Amber soon realized the dream home they had purchased for their growing family was built incorrectly on expansive soil. The home was not a steal because when it rained the soil expanded and caused the walls and floor to crack. This was well over a hundred thousand dollar problem to fix properly. The home was most likely built in the dry season and the soil was not tested for expansive clay and removed. Had they done the proper testing prior to building they would have built it on priers or they would have dug out the clay and replaced it with good soil and compacted it properly. It is very important to check for issues when buying a home. Sometimes if it seems to good to be true it is. A deal is not a deal if it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix. The buyers filed for bankruptcy and the house was repossessed. They left the home the day after their daughter was born, just three months after moving in. This story especially breaks my heart, and I would want to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Beware of bargains and always get an inspection and do your due diligence.
