It’s extremely important to know the “ins and outs” of real estate agents before you bring one along with you to help in your search for a home, just so that you might know what to expect, and what will be expected of you.

WHO A REAL ESTATE AGENT IS

In short, a real estate agent is someone licensed by the state to list and sell real estate, including homes, multi-family properties, and commercial and industrial buildings. A REALTOR®, however, is somewhat different. A Realtor® is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®. While an agent is always a real estate agent, a real estate agent isn’t always a Realtor®. A REALTOR® abides to a “Code of Ethics” put forth by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and also are required to be a member of the State Association of Realtors ( in California – CAR – California Association of Realtors) and in addition also required to be a member of a Local Association of Realtors. By bean a member of those associations the REALTOR® is subjected to certain rules and regulations on how to deal with the clients and with other agents as well. Real estate agents who work on behalf of the buyer are called a “selling agent” (and also are commonly called buyer’s agents). Real estate agents that represent the sellers are called a “listing agents”.
