the agent. Is this agent the right fit for your home buying process? Do they have the qualities you are looking for in an agent? The agent must have a history of ethical behavior, moral aspects, working capabilities, ideas, and motivation for their work. Another important factor to consider is the agent’s experience. Do they have positive feedback from previous clients? References? Are they new to the job, or a long-time veteran? Ask how many home sales they closed in the area you are looking at. This will be a key step in learning the expertise of the agent. If the agent has never made a deal in that area, that should not be an automatic disqualification. Many agents move to different brokerages and territories. Agents are also under the guidance of their Broker. In New Jersey, even though you hire a Real Estate Agent to help you buy or sell, in all actuality, you hired their Broker, and they are working under that Broker. A simple way to review everything before signing or hiring an agent is checking these things: • Are they a full time agent- this is important so they can work around your schedule. Time is of the essence. • Working hours, capabilities, skills, motivation, ideas, and loyalty. • Ethical exam certifications. (are they a REALTOR®) Take the time to interview real estate agents in your area. Here are some more detailed traits to look for when hiring an agent. Is he or she… • Current? Is the agent up-to-date with the latest housing trends so he/she can serve you effectively? • Connected? Does the agent have the necessary contacts to assist in every phase of buying a home? A network of connections should include home inspectors, quality service people, other brokers, and county officials.
