objects from a one-bedroom apartment might just fit a 16-cubic- meter truck, the contents of a fully furnished three-bedroom house might require up to two or three trips of a 26-cubic-meter truck. Make sure that you spare yourself a lot of grief and get the right size for your moving truck, especially if you’re facing a long- distance move. You can ask your friends for help packing and loading your things into this rented truck. This will make it easier to move without professional help. I had a great result when I paid a company to load my rental truck, then drove it to my new house and paid another mover to unload. The total cost was about 1/5th of the cost of a professional move, and all of my possessions stayed with me and arrived at my new home in one day. It was a lot better for me than the 3+ weeks delay that movers quoted me from when they picked up my stuff to when I would get it. If you're not bringing a semi-load of furniture and possessions, I'd highly recommend considering this option for an interstate move. To get the best U-Haul (or other rental company) deal and pull off a successful and uneventful move, keep in mind the following: • Time your move. Mid-month and mid-week are the best days to get a good price as most movers say the weekends and month-ends are their busiest times. • Look for inexpensive but serviceable packaging. Recycled boxes can save you money. • Start packing long before your relocation. Plan months ahead regarding which items you’ll bring with you and which ones to give away or donate. • Organize a moving team.
