In North Carolina, the house isn't yours until the Deed is recorded. Don't assume you can move right in when you leave the attorney's office. Neither the attorney nor the real estate brokers can give you the keys and legal possession of the house until the documents are recorded UNLESS you have a signed "Possession Before the Close" agreement. If you are planning to move the same day, please discuss this with your closing attorney and your real estate agent. The attorneys may be able to record the Deed on the same day, but sometimes it doesn't happen until the next day. When the Deed is recorded with the County Register of Deeds, YOU OFFICIALLY OWN THE HOUSE! You did it! Now get those keys and start moving into your new house.
