You can also transform your attic into a child’s playroom, sleepover spot, or a fun “hideaway” room with friends. Some attics could also transform quite nicely into a dedicated office space, away from the noise of the main area of the house. All you really need is a desk, desk chair, some basic shelving or drawers, a lamp, and maybe a rug and comfy corner chair. A piece of art and a plant would add a nice touch.
One idea is a recreation room or gathering area. You could set up a few sofas and chairs, a coffee table, end tables, lamps, and a large T.V. or fireplace — or maybe even both. A basement can be a great spot for entertaining guests, for family games nights, or for teenagers to escape and enjoy some privacy. Another idea is creating a movie theater-like experience with multimedia entertainment. You can invest in a large smart T.V. hooked up to speakers for movies and video game nights, and even add a pool or ping pong table and a beer fridge. Basements also make great spaces for dedicated and organized home offices and homework stations for kids or college students. Besides adding the obvious furnishings, accents, supplies, organization and storage solutions, consider installing upper cabinets to make the most of wall space.
“Flex spaces” are unused or underused spaces within your home that can be reconfigured and outfitted to serve a need or provide extra space. Your attic, basement, garage or large closet could be transformed into usable square footage without making any drastic changes to your home. 1. Attic Upgrade There are several ways you can upgrade your attic into a more intentional space. Assuming there’s at least one window, your attic could be turned into an additional bedroom if you add a door, which could increase the value of your home. This room could serve as a guest bedroom, rental room, kid’s room, or even a master bedroom suite, depending on the size of your attic, as well as its condition.
2. Basement Upgrade
If your basement is finished or partly finished, there are endless possibilities for what you could do with this space. Most basements have lots of room, generally the most in your home for usable square footage, which means you have a lot of options to upgrade your space.
