behind us.
I later heard from Coach Ron Anderson that in the off season the league created the "Tony Davis Rule" that says you can't show up at the end of the season and join a team. It is actually a good idea and a fair rule, glad we could be of assistance. Another lesson that Tony learned growing up was when he went from an all-white middle school in rural farm land in Frederick County Maryland to an urban middle school in Montgomery County Maryland, bordering Washington DC. Tony and I moved to Germantown, MD so that he could go directly from his middle school to baseball practice at Montgomery College. Tony loved middle school, made lots of good friends and did good in class. Fact is he got straight A's! The apartment that Tony, Angie, Tim and I lived in was known as the hood. When the kids would choose teams for an after school pickup basketball game I would know Tony was picked when the captain would say "I'll take the white kid." The neighborhood was beautifully integrated; black, white, Asian, Hispanic and every other culture you could imagine. It was the best thing in the world for Tony, he learned that everyone is the same. All of his new friends were all the same as him and were wonderful people and they are still his friends. Some of the kids had it rough, their mother's had no money, no car and if they missed the bus, then they missed school. Tony and I would feed his friends because their mom was passed out on drugs, so sad. They would ask if they could spend the night with us and of course we always said yes.
