WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR CLAIM Being involved in an accident is always an upsetting thing. It rattles us and makes it hard for us to think clearly. But there are some important things to do — or, in some cases, not do — immediately following the accident: AT THE SCENE: ; ; Stop your car. If possible, move to a safer place. If not, set up flares. ; ; DON’T say you’re sorry, even if you are. Don’t say anything that could even imply you caused the accident. ; ; Get medical help if needed — for you or anyone else involved. ; ; Call the police. (If it’s not an emergency, say so.) • This isn’t required in every state, but if you’re in doubt, call. • You can also go to a police station to report the accident. Do this within 24 hours. • If the police do come, get their names and badge numbers, plus the names of any other emergency personnel. • Get a copy of the police report. If they can’t give it
