AFTER THE ACCIDENT One of the most important aspects of the claims process on your end is to keep track of every estimate you receive and receipts from every accident-related expense. This includes repair bills, any lost wages, and any expenses that cover things you can’t do because of the accident, such as paying someone to clean your house, drive you to the doctor, or get your groceries. Now, every company has its own process when it comes to filing and following through on claims. The following is only a general guideline of what happens after you file a claim, so be sure to go over your insurance company’s process with your agent or broker. 1. Your insurer will check to see that your policy is in effect, then see if your accident is covered. 2. A claims adjuster will be assigned to your case. Some adjusters will come to you, but some companies will have you go to the adjuster. They’ll investigate the claim in detail, check your coverage, ensure a fair investment for the costs to fix or replace your car, and give you your offer with details about how they came to that number. • Go to your own mechanic for an estimate during this time. This will help you know whether the insurance company’s offer is good.
