WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR CAR IS STOLEN?
There are few things more disconcerting than going to get in your car and discovering it’s not there. When this happens, you’ll need to call the police and your insurance company. One thing to note about insurance on this issue: Even if you don’t have loss-of-use coverage, it’s quite possible your insurer will cover your rental car in this situation. However, you might have to wait a few days for this to kick in, as most companies start coverage about two to three days after you file your claim. Comprehensive coverage on the vehicle would need to be in place in order to cover a stolen vehicle, as theft is a peril under this coverage. Without comprehensive coverage, there is nothing (generally) that the insurance company will do. Really, the only way to recoup the loss would be to find the person who stole the vehicle and go after them personally. If you do have this coverage, there’s a long period of waiting that happens with regard to getting your payment for your stolen car. Insurance companies don’t want to pay until they’re absolutely sure your car isn’t going to show up, so it can sometimes take a month for them to pay you.
