Craig Speck - Auto Insurance

CHAPTER 13

INSURANCE COVERAGE BEYOND YOUR PERSONAL VEHICLES While I’ve mostly discussed auto insurance as it relates to your own regularly used vehicle, there are other situations for which you might have questions, such as rental cars, company cars, driving someone else’s car, classic or antique cars, and someone else driving your car. I’ve addressed all these issues below. RENTAL CARS There are a variety of reasons for renting cars, from travel to moving to having a vehicle while yours is being fixed. In Chapter 3, I briefly discussed how to make sure you’re covered in an accident in a rental car, but let’s get intomore of the details here. Before renting a car, check to see if your insurance covers rentals. If it does, you want to skip signing the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW). You’ll also want to see if your credit card has its own CDW. If it does, dig into the details. Does it include primary coverage? Then you’re good to go. But be sure you’re aware

of any exclusions, one of which may be driving after drinking any alcohol, even if you’re well below the legal limit.
