CHAPTER 17 Let's Talk About Pets
You love your pets, who are part of the family. But just like it’s a good idea to banish your kids during a showing, it’s also smart to park the pets somewhere else. At best, pets are a distraction. They bark, jump, and sometimes are so cute that potential buyers spend too much time petting the dog than touring the house. At worst, pets are off-putting. Some buyers are afraid of dog and cats, no matter how cute. Others are allergic, and the last thing you want is someone tripping through your house with eyes watering and nose running. Pets also come with smells. And even though you may be used to pet odors, they may be the first thing a buyer senses about your home. Here are some pet precautions you should take before or during a showing. Get rid of pet hair: If you have a shedding pet, the hair is everywhere. Hire professional carpet cleaners to shampoo rugs and upholstery to get rid of hair. Also, dust thoroughly before showings. Erase odors: To make sure there’s no stink, ask a neighbor to enter the house and point out any obnoxious smells. If you can’t clean away the stench, you’ll have to cover it with room deodorizer or lots of potpourri.
