I had a project at my personal residence and had asked a number of contractors for proposals. The project was a little more complicated than average, but not something that I figured would be impossible to achieve. After several contractors visited my property, I was disappointed. Almost all of them said the project (building a pergola on an irregularly shaped deck) was impossible. Or they proposed building the pergola in a way that would create a cumbersome and heavy set of piers that would likely destroy the look of the existing deck - and it was clear that they wanted to retro-fit an existing pergola "kit" onto my deck rather than build something to suit the space.
