While we are talking about storage I cannot stress enough on how important it is to de-clutter ALL your closet and storage spaces. Home buyers are nosey and believe me they will be looking in your closets. If your closets are packed to the gills with your belongings the buyers will subliminally be thinking "if they cant easily fit their stuff in the closets, neither will we". De-cluttering your spaces means that you will want to remove EVERYTHING first and then go through what you can either put into an inexpensive storage shed, donate or just throw away. You will be packing up your closets when you move anyway so might as well begin the process before you put your home on the market. You will be shocked as to how much junk you have accumulated over the years that you just no longer need. A good rule of thumb for clothes is that if you have not worn it any time during the last 5 years, you aren't going to. Donate or throw away. Also, purchase new hangers so all items are hung on the same type of hanger. you will be surprised on how good your closets will look- and so will your buyers! More on this topic is also discussed in the next chapter. Updating your home with ROI in mind is the best approach when preparing your home for sale. Look over this recent list of what buyers want in a home. Compare it to what you have in yours, and upgrade accordingly, without surpassing the price line for comparable homes in your area.
