The first thing to look for is whether the candidate in question followed all of (not some of) the application instructions you gave in the ad. ● Check for written communication and attention to detail. Is their email response clear and concise? Does it make sense with the ad? Are there careless errors? Do the links work? Are the attachments actually attached and explained? ● Is their resume and portfolio what you have in mind? Check over their resume and note their work experience, training and any other qualifications you have in mind for the role. Review the portfolio, if you asked for one, and see if their skills and style align with your own. ● Note their response times. When you email them to discuss the next steps, are they prompt in their response? Do they remember submitting the application? Are they genuine and excited? Meanwhile, here are some red flags to watch out for in the beginning before even continuing the process: 1. They sound aloof or unenthusiastic about hearing from you or about the position. 2. They seem to have the “freelancer attitude,” yet you are looking for someone long term. If they seem overly concerned with hours in a day the role will take or how much you are paying (when you are offering a generous sum), that could indicate they have multiple clients.
