- Foreword -
"We wish we listened t ened to Brian!" o Brian!" When Brian Merritt reached out to us to write an introduction to his book, we couldn’t say yes faster. Brian is very up-front and communicates what we need to do for our loan approval where so many other lenders will actually tell you just what you want to hear. Prior to getting married, my fiance' and I fell in love with a house we absolutely needed to have a few months before our planned wedding. My fiance' was a veteran and we were anticipating using his VA eligibility to purchase our home without a down payment. He was newly out of the military and really wasn't making a lot of money at the time, so we planned on also using my income to qualify. Brian was highly recommended to us and we called him first. But he told me that the only person that could be a co-borrower with a veteran is a spouse. He recommended that we simply go to the Justice of the Peace and get married, and didn't even need to tell anyone, and still have our wedding in June. I was a little stubborn about that, so I called another lender to get a second opinion. I actually called a loan officer at USAA who claimed to be a VA Specialist and he told me that wasn't the case, so we elected to use him for our financing instead of Brian. The process with USAA took a little longer than was promised. The day before we were scheduled to close, I finally was able to reach the loan officer who then said the the underwriter was just waiting on a copy of our marriage certificate or proof we were married before they would approve our loan.
