and a natural environment for items to be stored prior to a move. It is usually not climate controlled, and will not be viewed as detracting from "livable space". Buyers will expect this area to be filled, and as garages are fairly standard in their design and appearance (of course there always exceptions), they will not be as scrutinous of this area being crowded. The attic: This is the second best solution, although it will involve more work for a seller, often navigating pull down stairs. It is also not ideal since attics are, at time, heated or cooled, and a cluttered attic could impact a buyer's view on versatility of this potentially useable, "indoor space". The basement: Funnily enough, many sellers believe this is the best place to move their excess possessions during a sale. Nothing could be further from the truth. Since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most common trends in real estate is homeowners wanting to have the most "useable" space possible. Basements are ideal candidates for expansion, and often offer the potential to add up to 33% more square footage in living space if finished. Being that in today's economy finishing a basement costs approximately $25,000, basements with the potential to be finished are a tremendously marketable selling point for a home. Consider a property of 2000 finished sqft with a full, unfinished basement. If the basement has sliders to the rear of the property or even steps leading to a Bilco door exit, this space, if finished could add an additional 1000 sqft of finished space! Not only does this add value in that the owners will now have a new floor of living space, but it also does wonders for equity in that the property is now legitimately 3000 sqft of finished space.
