you’ll discard. Your “discard” piles can be further divided into “sell,” “give away,” and “throw away” (or recycle, depending). Remember, less is more. If you no longer need it or use it, give it away, sell it, or toss it. This will make packing easier and quicker for you. • Protect your paperwork. Keep a file of all your moving documents, such as contracts, invoices, bills, etc., close at hand. This file should be readily available whenever you need them. • Remember your utilities. During the process of moving, some people forget about their utilities. Inform your utility company(ies) of your moving date so they can disconnect services (i.e., water, electricity, cable, Internet) on the date after your move. And then make sure you’ll have those same utilities up and running on your move-in day at your new address. Schedule an activation or transfer of these services in advance so you don’t have to worry about them later on. This way, you’ll already have them in place once you move in.
Three Weeks Before the Move:
• Get your boxes. Every move requires boxes upon boxes! You might have some in storage from a previous move, but if you don’t have many, ask people you know if they might, or go to a local grocery store or moving company and ask for used boxes, or purchase new ones if the price is reasonable. Then, get out the boxes and start packing the items you won’t be using in the coming weeks. Label the boxes with the room to which the items belong. This will make your unpacking process systematic. Make a list of the items that go in each box. 165
