CHAPTER 7 The Three D's
Living in your home without your usual belongings during the home sale can feel temporary and impersonal—like staying in a hotel. However, creating that clean, neutral space is a necessary step toward securing top dollar for your home. That transformation begins with The Three D’s : Depersonalize, Declutter, and Discard. By thoughtfully removing personal items, eliminating visual distractions, and parting with unnecessary belongings, you create a space where buyers can effortlessly envision building a life of their own.
DEPERSONALIZING
Depersonalizing the home involves removing your personal items, such as photos, trophies, and collectibles. Knickknacks and wall decor are also personal taste items that may distract buyers from seeing the home as theirs. It’s not personal, but not many people will appreciate your beer can collection, antique kitchen accessories, overstuffed closets, VHS/CD/DVD/records collection, and general clutter, except you. Pack and store your treasured items out of sight. Consider renting a storage unit until the home sells. Present your home as a blank canvas where buyers paint the picture of their own dreams.
DECLUTTER & DISCARD
Extra furniture and items like books, magazines, CD collections, and hobby supplies can also detract from a room’s visual appeal. Your salt & pepper shaker collection is going to look like clutter 42
