once you’ve packed all the items in it. • Disassemble furniture that you won’t be using in the following days and pack or prepare for moving. • Set aside all unneeded items. Put to the side everything that you won’t be packing and taking with you to your new home. Throw away what needs to be tossed. Start giving away items you’ve chosen to give away, and schedule donated items for pickup by the local charity or organization to which you’ve decided to donate them. If you’re planning on a garage sale, now is the perfect time to do that. Any items you don’t sell will need to be thrown out or given away. • Discuss with your work. A move takes time and energy, and you’ll likely need to take some time off work, even if you plan to move over the weekend. File your leave from work for the days that you’ll be concentrating on the move. • Pack a suitcase. Prepare a small suitcase for yourself (and for every member of your family, if applicable) of items that you’ll need on the day of your big move, such as your phone, wallet, keys, basic toiletries, medication, clean clothes, towels, etc. • Visit your new home. Before you officially move in, it’s a good idea to check the condition of the new place and make sure everything is ready for moving day. Clean up all the clutter, and check if the switches are working and whether electricity is already available. • Discard unusable items. Throw away all unneeded and unusable items, especially flammable items, such as leftover paint, spray cans, or propane.
