Maria Grant - THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO AUTO INSURANCE

I’m not including this here just as a PSA, although it is an important one. It’s relevant to the conversation because when you text while driving, you’re likely going to drive more recklessly. You may cause crashes, drive above or below the speed limit, swerve, and get pulled over because cops think you’re driving drunk, and so on. Moving violations caused by anything, including texting, can definitely increase your premiums. While insurance companies aren’t omniscient and therefore generally don’t know if you’re texting while driving, they will notice if you have multiple moving violations, and that will increase your premium. The only time there would be a direct correlation is if you’re texting while driving someplace where it’s illegal, and you get pulled over and cited because of it. It’s a safe bet your premiums are going to go up at that point, too, since insurance companies might think that is a pattern of behavior and deem you to be a less safe driver.
