• If you need medical attention, go through your health insurance. ◦ They can recover the money, called damages, from the other driver or driver’s insurance. You will be paid through their liability and/or medical payments insurance.
The Claims Process
The first thing to do is to call in the accident as soon as possible. Remember, this doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily filing a claim. Even if you don’t, this covers your butt in case the other party decides to sue. When you talk to your insurance company or agent, there are some things you’ll likely want to ask: • Am I covered for this accident? • What is my deductible? • If I choose to file a claim, when is it due? • If I file a claim, how long will it take to process it? • Do I need to get estimates for my car repair, or will you do that? • If I need a rental car, do I have coverage? Regardless of whether you plan on filing a claim, your company or agent will send you a claim form and explain what documents you’ll need to send them. This will likely include the police report plus any medical and repair bills. If you’re in a no-fault state, you’ll file a personal injury claim. If you have medical payments coverage, your medical bills will be required for review. If you do decide to file a claim, do so carefully so you don’t miss anything.
