include injury and property damage you’ve caused, damage to your car that either you or someone else caused, and any lost income the rental car company incurs while the car is being fixed. If you have an umbrella policy, that serves as a good backup for whatever might not be covered. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are involved in an accident in a rental car, you should report it to the rental car company immediately. They can help walk you through the next steps you need to take. You should also reach out to your agent, broker, or insurance company for guidance. Determining whether you should get the rental car company’s insurance also hinges on your health insurance coverage plus your deductible amount plus why you have the rental car in the first place. It also depends on where you’re renting a car, as your auto insurance may not cover you in another country. Unfortunately, there’s no clear one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to whether you should buy the rental car company’s insurance. It can be confusing and overwhelming, especially if you’re renting the car because you’ve been in an accident and your car is getting fixed. That’s why I’m always happy to help you determine exactly what coverage you have (and what you might need) before renting a car. And of course, I’m there for you in case of an unfortunate accident, too.
Company Cars
If you’re someone who regularly drives a company car, it’s important you understand exactly what their insurance covers. Some offer collision coverage, but some don’t. Most of the time, your employers will assume liability if you’re in an accident. This is called vicarious liability, and you must be driving specifically for work purposes to be covered.
