CHAPTER 15 How to Handle Common Problems The world of auto insurance can be complicated, but there are some issues that pop up more often than others. Read on to discover what they are and what to do if they happen to you.
PROBLEM: LEM:You can’t get ahold of your adjuster.
SOLUTION: This is one of those possible situations for which you’ll ideally want to plan ahead. The first time you talk with your adjuster, be sure you get not only the adjuster’s name and phone number but his or her supervisor’s name and number, as well. You’ll also want your claim number and to be sure you know the date of the accident. If, at any point, repeated attempts to reach the adjuster fall flat, reach out to the adjuster’s supervisor. When you talk, explain that your adjuster isn’t following through and request that a new adjuster be assigned to your case. PROBLEM: LEM: The insurance company tells you which repair shop to go to. SOLUTION: If you like the repair shop, then technically, this isn’t a problem. But if you’re not happy with it, check to see if yours is one of the many states that lets car owners pick the shop. If it is, go back to the insurance company armed with this information and tell them where you’ll be going instead. PROBLEM: LEM: The adjuster missed some damage on your car, so the cost to fix it is more than the agreed-upon amount. SOLUTION: One way to likely avoid this issue in the first place is by always ensuring the repair shop feels the estimated amount is 66
