WHAT TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Your gut will likely tell you if the agent you’ve interviewed is the right person for the job, but I think it’s always good to know what to avoid in the selection process, too: • Having a family member as your agent. Families are complicated. Real estate is complicated. Save your relationships and hire someone else to do the work. • Picking the first agent you talk to. Trust me, I know you just want the process over with, but the wrong agent can prolong the process! • Choosing someone because they’ve sold a lot of houses recently or because they’ve mentioned the highest list price. • An agreeable agent. I’m not saying you want someone who’s going to debate you at all turns, but a good agent will not agree with all your suggestions. They’re the experts, so the right agent will listen respectfully, tactfully explain why your idea will or won’t work, and may offer adjustments to take your idea from no-go to great. Their focus should be on a strategy to sell your home, not stroking your ego by telling you every one of your ideas is brilliant. • Believing any agent can sell your home. Different agents have different experiences, specialties, and training, so be sure to get one whose background fits your needs.
