Remember, all it takes is that one great idea to make your dream come true. It’s like the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright. The brothers had been interested in flying since their father bought them a toy helicopter when they were boys; Orville even told a teacher that he and Wilbur would build a plane that could hold them. When they got older, the brothers started studying birds and building gliders. To test their research, they made a kite, which worked great. Using what they learned, they made a glider next, but it didn’t work anything like the kite. After lots of crashes, they decided they needed to start over, so they left Kitty Hawk and returned to their hometown of Dayton. Back in Ohio, they built a wind tunnel to test over 200 different styles of wings. After learning what worked best, they built a new glider. This one finally worked, and it was the first aircraft that could be fully controlled. Success! But the brothers weren’t satisfied quite yet. Their goal was to build a plane that didn’t slow down or lose height while it flew. This led to the idea of powering the plane, so they created a new type of propeller and built a small engine. After a few tweaks, these additions proved to be perfect. The Flyer 1 flew for 12 seconds on December 17, 1903. It was the first powered flight in history. The brothers made several more attempts that day, with the final one lasting 59 seconds. And yet the Wrights still weren’t done. They spent the next two years perfecting their invention and ultimately created the first practical airplane. On October 5, 1905, their latest model spent 39 minutes circling a field, flying 24.5 miles total. As kids, the Wright brothers had one idea: to build an airplane that could hold them. Not only did they achieve their lifelong dream, they changed the world!
